Ilen Oldies
Off to Baltimore Whit Monday 1923 Levis Quay

From small Beginnings.......
In this album, we will present from time to time, pictures of some of the practical work undertaken on the river. Our first pictures are of the pontoon sited at the West Cork Hotel by Mr. Tim Looney, Proprietor who is also a member of the RIPPLE Committee. On the second image, our Vice Chairman, Brendan Leahy and his Bride are seen on the pontoon after their wedding.
On the third is seen a cruiser on the Ilen taken from the yacht Inishbeg on which members of RIPPLE were treated to a wonderful day on the Ilen and on Cape Clear Island by Mr. Con Minihane of Baltimore Yacht Charters. Further photos from this trip will be on this site in the course of the next few days. The fourth picture is of the Marsh bank of the Ilen on which it is proposed to have the walkway and cyclepath located. This bank area extends from the Curragh (bypass) Bridge to the John F. Kennedy Bridge and it is hoped to utilise it all. Picture five shows how Skibbereen was built with its back to the river. All of the buildings along the bank at North Street, Main Street and Bridge Street are faced away from the river. These properties should increase in value quite substantially when the river is cleaned and their owners adapt their property to utilise the wonderful amenity literally at their doorstep.
Picture six is of the new pedestrian bridge at Levis Quay erected by the O' Driscoll family. At present it is a bridge to nowhere as the Council have not yet built the car park it is meant to serve. Great credit to the O Driscoll family who have once again added infrastructure and amenity to our town. RIPPLE thank them sincerely for their great work in dragging this town into the twenty first century.Picture seven is of the RIPPLE float in the St. Patricks Day parade in Skibbereen being towed by Paul Keane of Inishbeg House and Joker Boats.

The beauty of the Ilen
The journey from Baltimore to Skibbereen is a joy from beginning to end. In our first photo is seen Aughadown graveyard. Although a ruined church and graveyard may not seem to be an item to include, it is very beautiful and also serves to keep us in touch with our past, which is one of the objectives of RIPPLE.
Second photo of Donna, Noel, Annabella, Sarah and Frank aboard the Inishbeg on the Ilen Estuary.
Third photo is the Ilen behind the Bishops Palace in Skibbereen.
